Body Systems Project: The Skeletal and Muscular Systems
By: Emilie Claire, Ronan, Yazeed, Sawyer, Bronte, Rosalie, Gabby, Eryk, and Austin
About This Project:
In this project, we are researching one body system. After spending approximately two weeks taking notes on every body system we were assigned groups and one system. My group was given the skeletal system. We then created a brief presentation about this system. Due to the fact that both the skeletal and muscular systems could not function without the help of the other, my group joined forces with the muscular system group. We later did more in-depth and created a plan for a model. We have begun construction and will be finished in three weeks.
On the right is a link to our Skeletal System power point. This was made at the beginning research stage of our project.

Relate To The Real World
Our leg was modeled after a group member’s and is therefore to scale. We engineered our leg to work like a real leg. We used opposing muscle groups like in real life and attached tendons to the bones and muscle. The muscle is made out of elastic material which can contract and expand exactly like real life. In addition, we placed red and white pom pom balls to represent red and white blood cells inside the PVC pipe
- Refer to the slideshow
Discuss Your Model
- Our model displays the functions of the muscular and skeletal systems.
- Muscular: Contraction and Relaxation of the main leg muscles
- Skeletal: Structure, Support, Blood Cell Protection
- We didn’t model all of the muscles in the leg. We only modeled the quad and the hamstring as well as the calf and achilles tendon.
Discuss The Design Process
- We brainstormed ways to incorporate the muscular system and skeletal system into one model.
- We decided to model a leg.
- Next we considered the materials we would need to build our model (such as PVC pipe, elastic bands, and wood) and compiled a list.
- We acquired these materials.
- We started by putting together and painting the wooden frame.
- Once we finished the frame, we measured a group members leg and used those measurements to cut the PVC pipe to the desired length for the bones.
- A hinge was attached to the ¨bones¨ to connect them.
- After that we drilled holes in the PVC pipes to attach the tendons and muscles.
- We made the tendons out of string and tied them to the muscles (made out of elastic bands).
- We tied knots in the tendons and threaded them through the holes in the bone.
- We attached both ends of the muscles and tendons to the bone and created opposing pairs so the leg would function realistically.
- We attached the top of the leg to the frame.
Discuss Collaboration
- Leg construction: Rosalie Urban, Gabby Bitton, Austin Marshall, Sawyer Ikeda, Eryk Lewandowski, Ronan Shaffer
- Presentation creation: E.C. Schneider, Ronan Shaffer, Bronte Hoefer, Yazeed Hamami
- Overall, our group worked well together. We all contributed our ideas and time to achieve a common goal, without too many disagreements. This helped our efficiency and timeline so we could meet the deadlines we were presented with.
